Antioxidants as Chemopreventive Agents for Breast Cancer
نویسنده
چکیده
In the last decade the simplistic, stepwise concept of initiation, promotion, and progression has matured to a better understanding of the genotypic changes that ultimately lead to cancer. The hypothesis has been proposed that it may be possible to intervene pharmacologically during this process and that carcinogenesis may be arrested or reversed by synthetic or naturally occurring agents. Evidence supports the potential role of antioxidant agents in cancer prevention. Basic research has demonstrated that antioxidants can trap organic free radicals and prevent tissue damage. Although observational epidemiologic studies are not entirely consistent, many show an inverse association between dietary intake or blood levels of antioxidants contained in foods and subsequent cancer risk. The Breast Cancer Prevention Trial (BCPI) recently concluded that the antioxidant drug tamoxifen (Nolvadex) which was being evaluated for its potential ability to prevent primary breast cancer among high-risk candidates reduces breast cancer risk by 45% among women younger than 50, Long term side effects have not been evaluated.

Bioassay Methods useful to select the natural product cancer chemopreventive agents
Prevention of malignant disease such as cancer is obviously much more important than therapy, so primary prevention tactics should be invoked with the greatest possible effort. Because delaying a disease such as cancer is somehow equivalent to cure and it is now generally accepted that cancer can be managed through chemopreventive interventions. Since a considerable number of known cancer chemo...

Coleus tuberosus is classified as a local vegetable of the family Lamiaceae, the subfamily Nepetoideae and tribe Ocimeae. Ethanolic extract peel of Coleus tuberosus (EEPC) and ethanolic extract flesh of Coleus tuberosus (EEFC) were evaluated for their antioxidant activities by using ferric thiocyanate (FTC) and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) method. Cancer chemopreventive activities were evaluated b...

Carcinogenesis is a multiyear, multistep, multipath disease of progressive genetic and associated tissue damage. Chemoprevention—defined as the use of drugs or other agents to inhibit, delay or reverse this process—is recognized as a very promising and important area in clinical cancer research [1, 2] and has proved to be an effective strategy for risk reduction of breast, prostate and colorect...
متن کاملCancer chemoprevention. Part 1: Retinoids and carotenoids and other classic antioxidants.
Cancer chemoprevention is the use of specific natural or synthetic substances with the objective of reversing, suppressing, or preventing carcinogenic progression to invasive cancer. Currently, numerous chemopreventive agents are in various stages of development and testing. Part 1 of this two-part series provides an overview of issues unique to chemoprevention trials, including the use of surr...
